A Study on Peripheral Blood Findings in Mucocutaneous Lymph Node Syndrome (Kawasaki Disease)


Abstract
The mucocutaneous Iymph node syndrome is an acute febrile exananthemstoug illness of children and diagnosed entirely on clinical major mianifestion.
However, significant abnormalities in periperal blood findings were frequently noted and used as diagnostic aid.
Hereby, author studied on 12 children with mucocutaneous Iymph node syndrome who admitted to the pediatric department of Chungnam National University Hospital during the period of 2years from July 1982 to June 1984 to observe and analyze the abnormalities of peripheral blood findings on their diagnostic significances.
The results were summarized as follows :
1. Peak age was 19 months.
2. The ratio of mate to female was 2 : 1
3. The incidences of major symptoms were noted as follows; Fever over 5 days was in 100%, conjunctival injection in 100%, oral mucous membrane change in 100%, skin rash in 91.7%, hands and feet changes in 83.3%, Iyrnphadenopathy in 83.3%.
4. Average duration of onset was 4.7 days.
5. The values of erythrocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit were within normal range.
6. Total leukocyte count, ratio of neutrophils and Iymphocytes were abnormal and not com-parable in early and late stages.
7. Erythrocyte sedimentation rates were increased and lasted abnormaly high during observation period.
